Pittsburgh Half Marathon 2013

I MADE IT! I am so excited to have finished the half on Saturday, you have no idea.  It a rough journey.  I was injured, undertrained, and not too hopeful, but thanks to the donations and support from everyone in my life, I finished.  Here is an iPhone photo recap! Smile

A huge shout out to my running partner in crime on the big day: Tori.  We totally made it through this thing together and I am so proud! It was Tori’s first half and my second, and in my opinion, we rocked it.

That’s us before.  And below is Carla and myself.  Carla, along with my sister, Travis, my best friend Melissa, and my sister’s friend, ran the marathon relay.  Carla was first so she started off running with us!

If you look far in the distance, you can see the starting line! We finally got started around 7:25! Tori and I ran the first 6 miles, and then I really had to go to the bathroom so I got in line.  But it took too long and two minutes later, we kept going. We ran to mile 8 before we started a walk/run combo.  We continued like this the rest of the way.  We’d walk until a sign in the distance, and then run until we saw another landmark to start walking.  We also would walk up the hills and definitely ran across the finish line.

That’s obviously us after, with our sweet medals.  We were so excited Smile.  We finished in 2:28.59, right ahead of our goal of 2:30.  And we did if for cystic fibrosis, too. Even better.  I definitely don’t think I could have done it without Tori. Toward the end, my knees were hurting and my calves were cramping up.  She totally pushed me forward! I was so afraid that lack of training would make me miss my goal, but I am still on a post run high.  And it’s two days later!

Definitely took my shoes off ASAP.  Huge blisters on my second toes since they are longer than the rest haha.

That’s Tim.  He’s pretty much the reason I did all of the fundraising in the first place, and the reason that I continuously look for any way to help raise funds and awareness to cystic fibrosis.  He ran part of the relay, and I am so proud of him for doing so!  You can read about his journey in the 1:30 pm section of this race recap!

Because the marathon relay took a while longer than my run took, I chilled with Carla, my best friend Melissa, and some high school friends, Emma and Kylee, on the lawn near the finishers’ village.  Emma and Kylee ran their first half and totally did awesome.

After a bit of sunshine in the grass, Carla and I headed to the finish line to watch Travis complete their relay!

That’s him on the right!

After he finished, it was snack and picture time! Here’s me with the relayers (minus Melissa).

Sista, sista!

Because it was Cinco de Mayo, we went out for margaritas and Mexican food.  I just had a small strawberry margarita and it was tasty!

It was a great day, and I am so happy to have raised money for a cause near and dear to the heart.  Thank you all again for donations and support along the way.  I was also happy to have run for Boston, too.

Unfortunately, with all the happy, there is some sad.  A 23-year-old guy passed away on the half marathon course at mile 12.  He went into cardiac arrest and was unable to be resuscitated.  So unbelievably sad, and prayers go out to his family.  So scary to think that it could happen to anyone.  For more information, head over to this article.

It was a great day, and a great race.  Of course, it was no PR.  I was about 20 minutes away from the last time I ran, but under the circumstances, I think I am even more proud of this race.  Yes, it really hurts to walk down stairs.  And I may lose 2 toenails.  But I have a renewed love of running, and hope that I can stay pain free this summer!

Anyone else race this weekend? Tell me about it!

Saturdays Rock

Saturdays rock so much.  I have the whole day to do as I please, and I still have another day of the weekend after.  Yesterday was a great Saturday.  The weather was gorgeous, and Travis and I had a productive and fun day!

Because we stayed up late Friday eating Olive Garden and seeing Trav’s students put on an awesome performance of The Wizard of Oz, we slept in until after 8! Wowza!  I obviously got soup, salad, and breadsticks Friday night.  My absolute favorite.

After the late wakeup, we ate a nice egg breakfast, and then it was time to hit up Sam’s Club!

After unpacking our loot, we hung our hummingbird feeder (and have since seen our first of the year!), changed to bright placemats, and found a place for the awesome custom wine glass I won from Celebrate You Boutique, thanks to The Event Crashers! Smile  Funny enough, the boutique is in my hometown!!!

We then ate an awesome meal thanks to a rotisserie chicken we picked up at Sams.  And after our stomachs settled, we headed to our favorite local spot: Pemberton Park.  We went there before, but today, Travis brought his camera and I had a little bit longer of a workout to do.  5.5 miles done, between walking and running! The trail are gorgeous, and Travis loved all of the birds! I totally need trail running shoes.

We followed it up by eating dessert before dinner.  It’s totally fine in my opinion.  We had a Coldstone coupon (2 for $5!), and I had brownie batter froyo with PB cups.  It honestly tasted like I was licking a spoon of batter.

We then went to Chik-fil-a and I got some grilled nuggets and splits fries with Trav. So delicious.

We finished the night off with a movie and grading.  A Saturday night in the life of a teacher!

All in all, a great Saturday.  Hoping to make it a great Sunday, too!

A few last minute things: 1. I added a Wedding page to the blog for you to follow along with our preparations.  2. Our house is now a 2-blogger home.  Travis has started a birding blog to share his passion with others! Check it out if you like birds!

Shout out to everyone racing today, especially those at the DC 1/2! Best of luck to all!

Hope you’re all having as great of a weekend as we are! Smile
